PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

Premiere in 2021 at Turteatern in Stockholm, Sweden

Amanda Apetrea and Lisen Rosell together with Daniel Åkerström-Steen and Chrisander Brun created Pride and Prejudice at Turteatern. A free interpretation of Jane Austen's timeless work.

Welcome to an embracing, romantic world of steaming tea, dangerous ink and feverish cheeks. There will be gigantic estates, class contempt, saggy breasts in tight cotton and foggy wetlands. In Jane Austen's universe, dirty clothes coexist with fragile china and heavy tea bags.

In 2022, the show performed at the Performing Arts Biennale (Scenkonstbiennalen) in Västerås, Sweden. The selection committee for the 2022 Biennale has the following justification for choosing this free interpretation of Pride and Prejudice:

"Placed behind a permanently condensation-covered Plexiglas sheet, the set provides a sample of the pandemic's most claustrophobic staging. In low-cut empire dresses, Amanda Apetrea and Lisen Rosell move like restless caged animals in an Austen universe dominated by solitaire games as endless as the wait for a suitable marriage party. When the frustration is finally acted out in everything from erotic play to hysterical crying, there's nowhere we'd rather be than in their live-in viewing closet.”

In 2017, the team behind Pride and Prejudice staged Grottbjörnens folk (the Clan of the Cavebear) at Turteatern, then together with Nadja Hjorton. Amanda Apetrea and Lisen Rosell have for many years explored desire, body, sexuality, gender, audience contact and humor in a series of performances. Together with Daniel Åkerström-Steen and Chrisander Brun, they have worked together in different constellations. For example in The dark heart and the sweet part, 2020 (L. Rosell, S. Medina, D. Åkerström Steen, F. Arbabi), Springtime, 2019 (A. Apetrea, Cornelius, D. Åkerström Steen) and Beauty and the beast, 2011-17 (A. Apetrea, H. Ólafsdóttir, L. Rosell, C. Brun).
